You may come across various definitions of what a scrapbook is and you may even have your own ideas of what one is. You see, of all those meanings associated with scrapbooks, it's really all about one thing - keeping precious memories.
Just like photos, scrapbooks are custodians of precious memories that you will always want to return to. The moments that you have captured in photos and your creativity, deeply embedded in every page, note captions and journals in your scrapbook. One day, you'll take a look at the scrapbooks you have created and they will take you back in time.
We're not all enthusiastic scrapbookers. Many may have not even thought about starting one. However, most of us like to preserve our memories. Scrapbooking is the perfect media in which to do that. It goes beyond the basic photo album by adding art and creativity.
The toughest part may be beginning from scratch. Scrapbooking may appear easy enough yet the time and ideas you need to invest in them can be so huge that many feel themselves overwhelmed and initially frustrated before an idea crops up.
We have prepared some guidelines here that you may modify and apply to your own experience. Basically, this is just a collection of ideas that will help you refine the many ideas you may have
Somehow you have to know or come up with your own style.
Your scrapbook should be a reflection of your personality and it will show through in your finished book. If you are not sure what your preference is when making the design or the layout of your scrapbook, it is best to analyze yourself first. Know what your personal tastes are and refrain from following the hypes and fads prevalent in the scrapbooking industry. This way, you will be more likely to produce an original, personal idea that will work better.
There is a creative streak in all of us but we don't all necessarily have the talent to express it. Scrapbooking fills a void in that there is so much available for the creation of scrapbooks that practically anyone can produce an impressive album.
If you find it really that difficult to come up with an original idea, you can help yourself by checking out other scrapper's works. This doesn't mean that you have to copy them.
You can find inspiration in other peoples' designs. Sometimes, you can even get the best out of adopting a concept into your own. This technique is called scraplifting. As a beginner it is sometimes easier to follow other's work. Along the way you will discover your own methods of doing things. As a beginner, it won't hurt to check out some great works, then modify them using your own materials, photos and touches. As a beginner this can give you great inspiration and you will find yourself more confident about doing things in your own way.
Create your own mood board.
Mood boards are commonly used in the fashion industry as testing grounds for new ideas. These are boards where drafts of designs, cutouts and fabric swatches are displayed to present initial ideas for a new design. In fact, anything that will help the viewers see the direction and concepts of the designers are placed on the mood board. By utilising mood boards, a scrapper may easily discover their own style. Placing conceptual ideas into a tangible medium can help construct foundations for your layouts and ideas.
Don't be too critical in this process. As you flip through magazines, it doesn't matter why a picture or an image attracts you. If it produces a positive reaction then go ahead and tear it out. This is an excellent way to determine your style.
Secondly, you would want to check on color combinations. Some of us, we already have definite ideas on what our favorite color is and what we definitely will not use. Using a single group of shades is good if you can manipulate and mix them into varying combinations. However, most people find it hard to distract themselves from a single concept. It wouldn't hurt to experiment with other hues. When you're really stuck and there seems to be no colors that take your fancy, try looking at butterflies for some inspiration.
